Health related side effects of conventional hair products

In our introductory piece, we mentioned that conventional hair products contain a lot of harmful chemicals and additives that could be harmful to your hair and body. In this section, we have analyzed all of these chemicals and the adverse health effects they have on your body.

How do you identify some of these harmful chemicals?

Many times, manufacturers of conventional hair products tend to be equivocal about the constituents of their hair products. Even if you just read the labels on the products, you won’t be able to know if the product contains harmful ingredients. And if you proceed to buy these products, you could be exposing yourself to cancer-causing chemicals.

So, what’s the solution? Look beyond the front label of hair products you want to buy. Since manufacturers are often mandated to list the ingredients used in manufacturing their products, you will always find the chemicals used in making the hair care product you want to use. If a manufacturer is priding their product as an organic hair product, look through the label and be sure the product doesn’t contain any of the chemicals shown below:

Ammonia

This is one of the major components of conventional hair products. Ammonia is often used as an additive in hair colors to break through the hair cuticle to deposit color.

Ammonia is often represented on labels using any of the names below:

  • Anhydrous ammonia
  • Ammonia
  • Azane
  • Liquid ammonia
  • Trihydrogen nitride
  • Hydrogen nitride
  • Nitrogen trihydride
  • Nitro-sil.

Even though ammonia is non-carcinogenic, its many side effects include the following:

  • Hormone imbalance
  • Allergen
  • Irritation (throat, skin, respiratory system, nose, eye)

Damage to the structural integrity of the hair leading to weak, unhealthy, and dry looking hair

4-Dioxane

If petroleum is one of the ingredients used in making a hair product, 4-Dioxane is used as an agent to protect against skin irritation that the petroleum is likely to cause to the body. 4-dioxane is often labeled on products as Diethylene dioxide or diethylene ether.

Unlike ammonia, 4-dioxane is carcinogenic, meaning, it has the potential to cause cancer. It can also cause liver and kidney toxicity.

Diethanolamine (DEA)

This ingredient is often added to hair care products as an emulsifier to create foam and bubbles. Like 4-dioxane, it is carcinogenic and can also cause hormonal imbalance. Its other side effects include allergen, liver, kidney, brain, and reproductive toxicity.

Another chemical used as emulsifier in hair care products is monoethanolamine (MEA). The side effects of this chemical are similar to those of Diethanolamine (DEA).

Other chemicals often used as emulsifiers in conventional hair products include the following:

  • Triethanolamine (TEA)
  • Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
  • Sulfate

And they all have the same side effects.

FD&C Colors (Synthetic)

This is another ingredient you will find in conventional hair products. It is derived from Petroleum and is used to color hair products. FD&C is mostly carcinogenic and also causes irritation of the skin, hormone imbalance, allergen, and many other side effects that are dependent on the user.

Fragrances (Synthetic)

The sweet smelling fragrance of conventional hair products actually come from a combination of harmful chemicals. Some of these chemicals are carcinogenic and can also cause other harmful effects including hormone imbalance, allergen, and skin irritation.

Lead

Lead is normally used as a color additive in most conventional hair care products. Lead is carcinogenic and can cause brain toxicity.

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is used conventional hair care products as a preservative. The harmful side effects of this chemical include hormone imbalance, allergen, liver, kidney, brain, and reproductive toxicity.

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)

Like formaldehyde, methylisothiazolinone is used as a preservative. It is mostly used in making shampoos. The side effects of this chemical include hormone imbalance, allergen, birth defects, brain toxicity.

Paraben is another chemical used as a preservative in conventional hair products, and its side effects are similar to the ones listed above.

Mineral oil

Mineral oil is used as a lubricant in many conventional hair products. Naturally, you would think that mineral oil in a hair product is not harmful, but that’s not the truth. Mineral oil even though non-carcinogenic actually prevents skin from breathing, absorbing, and discharging waste products. It also slows skin cell development.

Petrolatum is another chemical used as a lubricant in hair products. The side effects of petrolatum are similar to those of mineral oil. In fact, it is usually represented as mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or simply petroleum on some labels.

Paraphenylenediamine (PPD)

This is the chemical normally used to make hair colors stay permanent. The side effects of this chemical are similar to those of the other chemicals above – hormone imbalance, allergen, and skin irritation.

Many other toxic chemicals often used in conventional hair products, all of which have harmful side effects include the following:

  • Resorcinol paraben – used for products to retains hair
  • Phthalate – used as a carrier for fragrances
  • PVP/VA – used to hold hair in place
  • Sunscreens (synthetic) – used as a protectant from the sun
  • Propylene glycol

In this section, we have not only shown you the health-related effects of conventional hair products; we have gone further to show you the different toxic chemicals used in conventional products that cause these side effects. When you look at the label on conventional hair products, these are the chemicals you find as the active constituents of the products.

Remember, the dye you use for your hair can come in contact with your body. So, these products won’t just damage your hair, but they can also damage your skin and cause you many undesirable health conditions.

In the next section, we’ll talk about organic hair colors which are the best, hair friendly, and nontoxic products for your hair treatments.

Why go organic

Many times, women ask, “Since conventional hair products are packed with chemicals, are there viable alternatives?” In fact, some people have stopped treating their hair because they don’t want to expose their hair and body to the chemicals in conventional hair products.

Yes, there are healthy alternatives to conventional hair products that will leave your hair not only feeling shiny but ensures that you don’t jeopardize your health. These alternatives are organic hair products.

The same way that organic foods are better alternatives and preferred to GMOs; natural hair products are better alternatives to conventional hair colors and products.

You don’t want to expose your body to all the chemicals that are usually packed in conventional hair dyes and products. In the last section, we analyzed some of these toxic chemicals and the kinds of damage they cause to the body.

What are organic products made of?

Unlike conventional products that have a lot of harmful chemicals as active ingredients, organic hair colors and products are made with all natural ingredients. This means no ammonia, synthesizer, petroleum jelly, sulfate, lead, mineral oil, etc. Instead, what you have are natural ingredients, hence the name organic.

In the past, finding organic hair colors and products used to be challenging. But a lot has changed, you can now find organic products at many spas, salons across the country.

What are the benefits of going organic?

Below are evidence-based benefits of organic hair products:

Safer to use

Conventional hair products contain a lot of harmful chemicals that can damage not only your hair but your skin. With organic products, you protect yourself from these toxic chemicals. All the health-related side effects of conventional hair products are scary, and you don’t want to subject yourself to those conditions.

With organic colors and products, you go about your business being confident that the product you bought with your money won’t cause you ill-health. Even if you are pregnant, organic products are still healthy for you and your unborn baby, unlike conventional products that have the tendency of triggering hormone imbalance in pregnant women.

Healthier hair

Using conventional dyes and hair products may give you the immediate gratification of having a beautiful hair, but have you considered the long-term effect of having a combination of harmful chemicals on your hair? It only takes a little time before you start seeing the damage the product is causing to your hair. Organic colors and products are actually the opposite; the more you use them, the healthier your hair will get. Would you rather prefer short-term beauty to long-term health? We already know your answer.

The strength of your hair is one of the first areas you would notice dramatic improvements once you start making use of organic products. Hair breakage is a problem that many women face, and this is usually due to prolonged exposure of hair to chemicals. One thing you need to understand is that the hair is organic and will most definitely blend well with natural ingredients. With the natural ingredients well blended into your hair shaft, your hair follicles are more strengthened.

Improved styling

With organic products, you have enhanced styling possibilities. You can easily shampoo out the product without leaving build-up on your hair. The products are normally pH balanced and still allow your hair and scalp to breathe. The natural styling ingredients used in making organic hair products far outperform the synthesizers used in conventional products.

Improved overall health

When you use conventional hair products, where do you think the chemicals used in making the products go? They are absolved into your body where they cause problems to your body. With continued use of these chemical-filled products, you continue to poison your body with small amounts of harmful chemicals.

Meanwhile, with organic products, you are confident that no harmful chemical is getting into your body system.

You contribute to a healthier environment

We have a moral obligation to keep our planet safe, and you can add your quota by using organic hair colors and products. When you treat your hair with conventional hair products and wash the products off, where do you think the chemicals in the products go? They go down the drain and into the environment. Over time, the accumulation of these chemicals in the atmosphere begins to alter the natural order of our environment.

Meanwhile, with organic products, you don’t contribute any harmful chemicals to the environment. The natural ingredients used in making these products are biodegradable and won’t pollute the environment when used or disposed of.

There is really no better way to put it; products that use natural ingredients are healthy, and those that are packed with harmful chemicals are definitely not the best for you.
